The Italian Wolf, also known as the Apennine Wolf, was originally described in 1921 as subspecies Canis lupus italicus by Italian zoologist Joseph Atobello. However, following WWII it was believed to be extinct. It was not.
After the war the wolves spread west from Sicily to the island of Corsica and then on to Southern France and finally across the Atlantic and into the United States through New York City.
By 1946 the wolves, led by a cunning and ruthless leader, were planning to devour the youth and disenfranchised of the U.S.

In 1971 there were only three ways out of the soul-crushing, abject poverty of the Jersey City shithole of a slum they called the Duncan Avenue Federal Housing Project; prison, the military or the likely end to both – death.
In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Billy Chance had a dream: to become a doctor.
All he’d have to do is finish high school, (something no one else in his family had ever done before), find a shit load of money, (something else no one else in his family had ever done), and get accepted to college, something no one . . .

Daniel Goleznovitch was born on the 16th November in the early part of the 20th Century in Potsdam in Germany; the last child of David and Eva Goleznovitch. There were already three children living in the small flat above the pawnbroker’s shop: David Junior, Rosa and Solomon. In the early 1900s life was hard enough for Jews who were immigrants; Daniel’s family might have been second generation German but they were immigrants for all that, for they could not trace a perfect German line back through their ancestors.

A new president has taken the reins, the Space Race is in full swing and the economy is at its peak since the end of WWII. It’s 1961 and the future looks bright. However, the entire country is not running on greased groves. Rank Publishing Ltd., in New York City, is hanging on by a thread.
With the advent of electronic printing, a television in nearly every house, and newspaper circulation up almost tenfold since the end of the war, news stories are cheaper and more readily available. Magazine circulation is plummeting and the new sensation is supermarket tabloids.

John Collins was born with the proverbial silver spoon. He was trained and coached from birth to take over the company business but while in college something happened. John Collins, II, heard the call. He veered from the path chosen for him and joined the Army as an officer. That got him disowned by his father but not his grandfather.
The old man made sure that John would have his share of the money generated by the giant company. The old man went as far as holding stock in trust for John.

Detective Cody Ridges left his former employment under a dark cloud. He found himself employed in a much smaller police department. The Boxwood County Sheriff was willing to hire him but it was a tremendous step backward career-wise for the big city detective.
Suddenly his bad luck changed to good the moment he saw Catlin Talent a beautiful lawyer.
He had not even settled in to his new home, which was in a barn, when he was baffled by a series of home burglaries, a killing of two innocent people, a jail escape and one crime right after another.

“A fascinating and lesser-known part of Mafia and WWII history, this
brilliantly-researched novel is quite an eye-opener!”

"Dock workers shout and swear coarsely. You can almost smell the
creosote and tobacco smoke as they do while the impression of a New
York metropolis coming into its own is particularly potent. As a
narrator he never has us at a loss as to our location, and using
something of a film maker's palate, he lets the streets and docksides
of New York become a central character in their own right."

The Sunday Independent,
“Like a sunken treasure ship this intriguing wartime
story has now been well and truly excavated.”
- Irish Daily Mail, London
“I was a bit wary as I began reading, thinking the use of colloquial
speech and vocabulary would make the book hard going. However I was
wrong; instead it gives the book a distinctive flavour, alongside the
descriptions of a bustling New York."

Just a quick "Thank you" for Operation Underworld. Being a

"I have been a history enthusiast for many years, and was frankly
bowled over by the historical accuracy of the novel, as well as the
effectiveness of the device used to carry the story. Historical
fiction so often tends to be either too dry to capture one's interest
for long, or superficial fun to read, but at the expense of historical
accuracy. With Operation Underworld, Mr. Kelly seems to have found the
happy medium that balances both.
Now of course, we are all anxiously awaiting his next historical
novel."

“I am greatly enjoying Operation Underworld. The visual and
auditory image of the two guys in the hold of the ship striking the
water valve in unison to the choral strains of the Anvil Chorus made
me burst out laughing! That is such a great visual, in such a weird
context!
