Jeremy dropped out of school at 16-years-old and now makes his living building air-cooled Volkswagen transmissions, for dune buggies that run out in the desert.
During a test trip into the desert, Jeremy finds a skeleton down an isolated dry wash. The skeleton isn't human. Jeremy buries the skeleton and finds some gear in a synthetic, leather like pouch.
When Jeremy gets the pouch home and open it, it contains a computer. It's some sort of laptop computer.
Jeremy manages to get the computer up and running.

Young Joh is growing up on a world called Xerbuc.

A first space expedition from Xerbuc made it to the larger of Xerbuc's two moons. On Varanna they found an abandoned, but well preserved ship. The ship was built by what was called the Empire. The ship is a long distance voyager, called a Longliner, intended for interplanetary trade. There are star maps aboard and simple directions for the operation of the ship.

Due to some inspired computer hacking, young Joh trains himself to operate the Longliner.

Ralph is getting along in years. He's maybe a bit worried about his job. He gets a call from work, early Christmas morning.
It seems that there's a bus load of some kind of monks down at the bus station and their bus has broken down with engine troubles. They need someone to come in and fix the problem.
Ralph agrees to come in and work on the problem. He then walks to work, through snow, slush and freezing cold.
Ralph does manage to get the bus fixed.
The monks are grateful and they give Ralph a little present.

I know why your educational system isn't working. I know because of The Pencil Sharpener Man (TPSM).

I was attending a high school. We had the best by damn English department in the whole world (well, anyhow that's what the high school English Department people told us.) As English students we studied poetry and literature. I don't mean we just read poetry and literature, I mean we delved deep into the artistry of the written word. We understood such eldritch and recondite concepts as 'purple passages,' 'figurative speech' and 'hidden meanings.

I lecture, "Nanci told me that she had just got off work, from her airline stewardess job, three guys just happened by and they sat and talked for a few minutes, then suddenly her landlady was at the door, accusing her of all sorts of nastiness and then the landlady terminated her lease. I asked Nanci when it happened and I was told, oh, it was late, maybe two or three in the morning. I then knew that what I had been told was a lie and that there was indeed some nastiness going on.
